The majority of patients wanting their own personal pulse oximeter prefer a self-contained fingertip oximeter to the larger handheld or tabletop units. This isn't just a financial preference, although certainly the finger oximeters are generally lower priced than a handheld oximeter with comparable features. No, one of the most popular benefits is the sheer convenience they provide. They're not bulky, heavy or cumbersome and have no complicated controls.

It is important to consider how you intend to use the oximeter and who will be operating it before making a decision.

The earlier traditional models (3520 & 3420) were designed very much with intensive, constant use in professional and Emergency Medical environments such as A & E Departments, busy Hospital Wards, Paramedic Ambulances, Military Field Hospitals and Mountain Rescue Medical Teams.

The more recent additions to the range of oximeters are aimed at less vigorous, occasional, home use. With careful responsible handling, they should perform quite satisfactorily but it is important to remember that they aren't intended for heavy handed use or built to withstand being dropped or kicked around.

Finally, fingertip oximeters are really only designed to be used on the finger of an adult or older child. If an oximeter is needed to monitor oxygen saturation somewhere else (ear, toe, palm or foot) or on a small baby/toddler, then it would be prudent to seek our advice on the alternatives before making a purchase.
