To enable a patient's oxygen saturation and/or pulse rate readings to be "recorded", for subsequent analysis, it is important to have an oximeter which stores data as frequently as possible (ideally every few seconds) for as many hours as appropriate. Once the data has been obtained and stored in the oximeter's memory, there needs to be a method of outputing the information for review, analysis and report generation.

The most usual method is to download the data into a computer programme that can handle the sheer volume of data produced and produce a meaningful visual report, whether obtained during an overnight sleep study or during a "six minute walk test".

It is vital therefore to choose an oximeter that is either compatible with the software you currently use or to decide which software programme would best suit your needs. One or two of these oximeters have their own data management software included within the package, although you may still be able to use them with an alternative commercially available sleep study software programme.

A reusable sensor on the end of a length of cable is clipped onto the finger and the other end is attached to a wrist worn,  handheld or tabletop unit. Handheld & tabletop oximeters can be used with different types of compatible sensor, which gives the user a choice of reusable or disposable sensors, as well as a choice of different sites including the earlobe, hand, foot, finger or toe. Softer, flexible probes should be used if monitoring continuously for four hours or longer. It is also advisable to check the condition and integrity of the skin at the monitoring site and reposition the probe to prevent damage to the surface of the skin.
