The PulseOx 5500, from SPO Medical Inc., uses pulse reflectance technology for accurate measurement of blood oxygen saturation level (often referred to as "sats") and heart pulse rate.
Unlike traditional "transmission" oximeters, it is the red and infrared light reflected back from the underside of the fingertip that is measured, thus avoiding the nail area completely. This requires far lower intensity light sources, providing unbeatable battery life.
It also means that nail varnish and false nails have no effect on the accuracy of the measurements.
