What are Pulse Oximetry Sensors and Attachments?

The original method of obtaining pulse oximetry measurements with a handheld or bedside pulse oximeter is a reusable sensor/probe on the end of a length of cable, which is clipped onto the finger and the other end is plugged into the device close to the patient.

The oximeter unit itself has a connector socket which allows it to be used with different types of compatible sensor. This gives the user a choice of reusable or disposable sensors, as well as a choice of different sites including the earlobe, hand, foot, finger or toe.

Some sensors have a softly sprung clip to hold them in place, others use velcro wraps or sticky tapes to attach them securely and comfortably to the patient.
